This Week in Rotary

Posted By Bob Girvan

Our first meeting of the year on Wednesday, 1st Febuary saw us meet in our new venue, the RSA. With great facilities and suberb food our new venue received 100% approval from our club members who attended.  Thanks to our membership committee we also enjoyed the presence of 7 guests who may become future members.

Our Guest speaker Jim Henderson from Ashburton Civil Defence spoke about the probability of an Alpine fault earthquake and the damage that it will likely cause. While we can’t predict earthquakes, scientific research indicates there is a 75% probability of an Alpine Fault earthquake occurring in the next 50 years, and there is a 4 out of 5 chance that it will be a magnitude 8+ event.  Thanks Jim for a very scary but informative talk.
