Primary School Speech Competition

The final of the Year 5& 6 class of the Primary School Speech Competition was staged on 3rd September at the RSA in the Linton Lounge.
The adjudicator was Christine Wilson. When announcing the placings she commented on the standard of the speeches and gave the students some very valuable pointers which I am sure that they will respond to in the future.
1st placing went to James Hawe who spoke on the benefits of each class in a school having a pet. He was presented with the trophy and a $50 voucher from NBS. In 2nd place was Summer Stoddart whose title was “Why I Want to be Long Distance Runner” and in 3rd place was Ben Wilson speaking on “Why I Want to Go Fishing More Often.”
Honour Roll presentations were made to Tearoa Tunui from Netherby School and Will Fitzgerald from Methven Primary School. Each recipient received a certificate which summarised each of their qualities related to citizenship, leadership, service, responsibility and character. Mr Jones of the NBS donated a travel bag to each of these students.

The second night of the speech finals held on 17 September resulted in Maya Rollinson taking out 1st place and receiving the challenge trophy. She also received a $50 voucher, also donated by NBS. Second place went to Saskia Blake and 3rd to Riley Heaven. Honour Roll presentations given out on this night were to Ollie Morten from Hinds School, Sofia Salazar and Mesulame Ravouvou from Our Lady of the Snows, Deepika Kamboj from Mt Somers/Springburn, Flynn Hill from Longbeach School and Henry Oldham from St Joseph’s School.

Assisting in the adjudicating on the night of the Year 7 & 8 contest was Jake Parsons, head student at Ashburton College.
