This Week in Rotary

President Philip welcomed a good number of members to the weekly meeting and also welcomed guest speaker Pup (Paul) Chamberlain. Philip advised that the group of 4 members who were planning to spend a week helping with the Fox River clean up were advised that they were not required as the first phase being undertaken by volunteers has been completed. A get together of members and partners interested in going on the Stewart Island trip early next year will be held on Friday evening. After the meal, Sergeant Ray conducted a lively session in fining various members, sometime twice for any indiscretion’s over the past week.  A letter of thanks has been received from the Cancer Society Mid Canty group for our $1000 donation for helping run the Wellbeing and Resilience presentation last month.

Ray McLaren introduced guest speaker Pup Chamberlain. Pup of course was our own well known and respected community constable and he now works for the CDHB promoting wellness and mental wellbeing. Pup told us of his 38 years in the police force with some interesting and amusing experiences and also shared with us the difficult times of having to deliver bad news to loved ones. Without realising it he discovered the pressure and anxiety of this had caused serious effect on his own personal wellbeing and mental state. This prompted him to leave and start with helping others through the difficult times. His 5 ways to wellbeing are.

  • Connect; talk and listen. Be there. Feel connected.
  • Give; your time, your words, your presence.
  • Take notice; remember the simple things that give you joy.
  • Keep learning; Embrace new experiences. See opportunities. Surprise yourself.
  • Be active; do what you can. Enjoy what you do. Move your mood.

A great presentation and thank you Pup for sharing it with us.

Our guest speaker on the 21st will be Hamish Riach who will speak about the Ashburton District Council and Crusaders. This will be a partner’s night and members are encouraged to bring a guest.
